Govt making all-out efforts to help farmers

Food security minister stresses use of modern technology to boost output

ISLAMABAD:

The government will take all-out measures to facilitate farmers in using modern technology, said Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam.

With the support of provinces, the federal government would soon announce a minimum wheat support price for achieving the procurement target, he said.

Talking to a private news channel, Imam said the government was taking all possible measures to promote agriculture, enhance wheat production and improve financial condition of farmers.

He emphasised the need for introducing modern technology and innovation in agriculture and other sectors.

The minister pointed out that the government was working on Chinese seed research technology for enhancing wheat production and it would provide certified seeds to growers for increasing yields of various crops.

“We need to modernise our seed technology for major crops,” he said, adding that improved farm techniques would also be promoted and issues like land and water management would be addressed on priority. “We are trying to evaluate quality wheat seeds and will try to give them to the farmers for increasing production,” he added.
