Holistic analysis of fisheries sector sought
There is a need for conducting a holistic sectoral analysis of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Pakistan to identify the investment gaps and constraints hindering development opportunities in the sector.
This was stated by stakeholders during a consultation to develop a new National Policy on Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in the country apart from evolving a plan of action in the sector for the next decade. It aims to build sustainable management and utilization of fisheries and aquaculture resources through the creation of a conducive and enabling environment for equitable, economic and social development in the country.
The consultation webinar was organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in collaboration with the Fisheries Development Board of the National Food Security and Research Ministry. The webinar was attended by participants from the federal ministries of food security, maritime affairs, fisheries departments of all provinces, technical experts from the FAO, representatives of fisheries organizations and experts from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and academia.
“The existing fisheries legislation needs to conform to the international standards.
