Pakistan seeks Dutch investment in dairy farming

Minister says both countries can collaborate in research on food security

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan and the Netherlands can cooperate in the field of floriculture, said Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam.

In a meeting with Netherlands Ambassador Wouter Plomp, Imam highlighted that both the countries could collaborate in trade of fresh cut plants, flowers and bulbs. He appreciated the Netherlands’ efforts to provide technical assistance and training in Pakistan. The minister stressed that Pakistan and the Netherlands had vast potential for collaboration in the field of research on food security including agriculture and livestock.

Discussing the potential of livestock sector, he underlined the need for value addition in animal products such as meat, dairy, etc. He also sought Netherlands’ investment in dairy farming, agribusiness and food processing.

It was mentioned that the Dutch agriculture sector was diversified and covered a wide range of products. Pakistan is importing genetic material from the Netherlands for artificial insemination and is also importing milk-producing cattle. FrieslandCampina of the Netherlands, which is the sixth largest dairy cooperative in the world, acquired 51% shares in Engro Foods in 2016 and it became a subsidiary of FrieslandCampina.
