RAWALPINDI:

A couple in Rawalpindi were left shocked on Sunday when hospital staff handed them the body of an infant who had been delivered health just three days prior. However, the mother later said that it was not her child, sending staff in a frenzy.

The hospital management has vowed a probe to determine and take action against negligent staff.

Havlian residents Aijaz and his wife had brought their three-day-old son to the Benazir Bhutto General Hospital (BBH). The doctors admitted the infant to the emergency department. However, the parents were left shocked when staff later handed them the infant’s bloodstained body.

The couple returned to their native town and organised a burial. But before they could bury him, the distraught mother noticed that the diaper worn by the deceased was not the same as the one they put on their son.

The parents returned to the hospital with other family members and told the hospital management the whole story. They were then taken to the nursery where they identified their child healthy and alive.

The BBH Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Rafiq Ahmed subsequently formed a committee to probe the matter.

He added that they will find those responsible for the negligence and take strict action against them as per the law.
