Rapes have, can, and will continue to happen: Shoaib Mansoor

Haroon Shahid shared 'Verna' director's quote about sexual violence, calling for capital punishment for perpetrators

Actor and singer Haroon Shahid shed light on Tuesday on a grim reality of our society in the wake of the horrific gang-rape of a mother of three on the Lahore motorway.

Taking to Twitter to recall an especially poignant and relevant moment from his time on the sets of Shoaib Mansoor’s Verna, Shahid shared what Mansoor had told him when he inquired about the believability of a specific story line in the 2017 film.

“I remember while shooting Verna I'd question Shoaib sahab, how is it possible that someone can walk into a park and pick up a girl and rape her in broad daylight? It sounds impossible,” he wrote.

“His response was "Hota Raha hai, ho sakta hai aur hota rahay ga (It has happened, it can happen and it will continue to happen),” he further shared. The Do Bol actor went on to advocate for capital punishment for rapists, adding the hashtag ‘#HangRapists’ to his tweet.

Many on the twitterverse have started trends to push for capital punishment, with many stars also backing them up, calling for strict laws to be put in place to ensure safety.

Shahid’s Verna co-star Mahira Khan, also took to social media to announce her support for victims and to rally against violence against women. She shared that she has teamed up with The Commonwealth to raise voice for the women and girls in our societies, posting a video on her Instagram for their #CommonwealthSaysNOMORE campaign.
