Tax officials remanded in corruption case

Court ordered the IO to submit the case challan within 14 days

A provincial anti-corruption court sent two local tax deputy directors, Mehboob Baig and Nadeem Kamal, to jail on judicial remand in a case pertaining to corruption in the issuance of tenders for a cattle market. At the hearing, the investigation officer informed the court that two other accused, namely West District Municipal Corporation former chairperson Izhar Ahmed and West municipal commissioner Ashfaq Mallah, were on the run. He said that corruption by the officials in the issuance of one tender alone had caused a loss of Rs55 million to the finance department. At this, the court ordered the IO to submit the case challan within 14 days, as well as arrest and present the accused on the run in court at the next hearing. It sent Baig and Kamal, who were presented in court by Anti-Corruption Establishment officials, to jail on judicial remand and adjourned the hearing.
