Work on Ring Road to start in early 2021

Planning minister says project included in development programme

Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar on Thursday approved to start the Islamabad Ring Road project in the first quarter of next calendar year.

The minister has also included the funds for the Islamabad Ring Road project in the development programme on recommendations of the lawmakers from Islamabad.

Islamabad Ring Road project will 60 kilometre (km) long. It will be built on the model of a motorway and called the second inter-city road of Islamabad. The cost of the project has been estimated to be around Rs7 billion.

According to documents seen by The Express Tribune, after Rawalpindi ring road, the government had prepared a project of constructing another ring road in Islamabad on the same design.

Under the proposed project, the motorists will reach Pakistan Secretariat through Sangjani, Shah Allahdtta, Margalla Road, sectors of F series. The road length from GT Road to Margalla will be 10km. The corridor would commence from the Sangjani spot which is the endpoint of Rawalpindi Ring Road. It will connect with the Rawalpindi Ring Road at Radio Pakistan Junction near Rawat.

The road will also link Bhara Kahu and Kallar Sayyedan while it will also provide an easy route to the vehicles entering federal capital from Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Hazara division.

The construction of the ring roads in the twin cities will help lessen the pressure of the heavy traffic on cities' thoroughfares as both roads will be used to connect with motorways and GT road.

Officials said that the foundation of the road project would be laid next year in March-April and will be completed in 18 months under the public-private partnership.
