LAHORE:

Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has given a principle approval to initiate spadework on four small dams in the Suleman Mountain Range for saving hill-torrents’ water instead of letting it ruin the nearby infrastructure.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the chief minister at his office on Tuesday.

Buzdar highlighted that the government is pondering over different options to construct small dams in the province to conserve water.

“Hill-torrents are wasted every year which can instead be saved and used for irrigation and drinking purposes,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Buzdar unveiled that a technical study was underway and following its completion, the Punjab government will kick start ground work on this project.

Meanwhile, Punjab Irrigation secretary apprised the chief minister about the various aspects taken into account for the construction of small dams.

Earlier this year, CM had directed the authorities to expedite work on small dams in Koh-e-Suleman. He had approved engineering and feasibility studies after the experts identified 14 suitable locations for building small reservoirs.

He had approved spadework for building small dams at Fazala Chowki and Fort Munro during the first phase.

The chief minister had also asked the Punjab irrigation department to collaborate with experts to initiate work at five different places in the Suleman range.
