Record-breaking rain
The current monsoon spell has caused heavy and moderate rains in the city in recent days, while a new system of rain has also entered Balochistan via Afghanistan, bringing torrential rains to the city.
Heavy rains started from Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Landhi, Malir and Super Highway and Surjani Town on the outskirts of the city and later spread throughout the city, including North Karachi, New Karachi, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Clifton, DHA, MA Jinnah Road, Saddar, Tower, Sharae Faisal, PECHS, Tariq Road, Bahadurabad and Federal B Area, while thunderstorms hit different parts of the metropolis for three hours in a row in the first phase, followed by repeated spells.
The highest rainfall was recorded at Faisal Base with 223.5 millimetres on Thursday, followed by Surjani at 193.1mm and Keamari at 167mm. The heavy downpours also led to two more weather stations - PAF Masroor, with 148.5mm, and Old Airport, with 109.9mm - breaking their previous records of rainfall in the month of August.
A total of 487mm of rain has been recorded at Faisal Base, 380mm at Masroor and 319mm at Old Airport in this month.
While the Met Office had initially forecast light to moderate rainfall in the city on Thursday, it was forced to revise its prediction, with chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz stating that there was a high probability of heavy rain and thunderstorms until Friday morning (today), followed by moderate rainfall.
