KARACHI:

The city witnessed intermittent rainfall with thunder and lightning for the second day on Saturday evening, while the bodies of two people who had drowned in Gujjar nullah the previous day were retrieved.

At least three people, identified as Nasir, his son Bilal and brother Adnan, were swept into Gujjar nullah by strong currents of water as the area flooded on Friday. The rescue officials have retrieved Nasir and Bilal's bodies while continuing the search for Adnan.

Meanwhile, the city's power supply system gave out once again amid the continued rain, with over 500 feeders affected across the city. While citizens complained that this had become a regular occurrence, a K-Electric spokesperson claimed the power supply was suspended as a safety measure.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Karachi received 202.7 millimetres of rainfall during the two days, with Landhi, Gulshan-e-Hadeed and Surjani Town seeing the most rain on Saturday at 18mm, 17mm and 16.5mm respectively until the filing of this report.

Chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said a low-pressure system was present in Rajasthan, India, with another was hovering over central India. He stated the current monsoon system was strengthening due to humidity from the Arabian Sea, adding that the rainfall may continue until August 28. The city may witness heavy rains on Sunday [today] as well.

PMD director Abdul Qayyum Bhutto further said the monsoon system was being strengthened by the continuous appearance of low-pressure systems, under which up to 100mm rain could be recorded in a single day.
