LAHORE:

After the outbreak of Covid-19, the Chinese meat industry is transforming rapidly and shifting away from traditional food towards Halal meat, said Pak-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) President Zarak Khan.

Addressing a think tank session on Wednesday, he said Chinese farmers were unable to match pace with meat demand because a small proportion of China’s total land was available for livestock.

“As a result, China is facing a shortage of all three basic requirements, ie land, water and feed,” he said. “Now, Beijing is left with no option but to import meat from the international market.”

He pointed out that Beijing imports meat from Vietnam, Brazil and Australia at present and the current competitive environment gives a huge window of opportunity to Pakistan to initiate production of good quality meat and export to Chinese market.

He said that Pakistan could become a hub for catering to meat requirement of China by adopting the Turkish cattle fattening model. He added that cattle fattening activity had immense potential for employment generation, enhancing volume and quality of meat produced and to alleviate poverty in the country.

“By adopting the Turkish model, Pakistan can earn precious foreign exchange and cope with the problem of rising unemployment,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, PCJCCI Senior Vice President Moazzam Ghurki stressed that Pakistan had the potential to uplift exports and earn foreign exchange by promoting high quality meat across the world. The official recommended the government to seek Chinese cooperation for enhancing technical skills.
