Traders seek tenancy law

Say Senate panel approved draft of amendment bill four months ago

ISLAMABAD:

To ensure an amicable resolution to the tenancy issues of the federal capital, traders of the city have demanded that the government expedite legislation on the matter immediately.

This was demanded by representative trade bodies including All Pakistan Anjuman Tajiran and Traders Action Committee President Ajmal Baloch and Secretary Khalid Mehmood.

They said that the business community of the federal capital has been facing extreme difficulties due to the absence of proper tenancy law.

They demanded that Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awaan and Planning Minister Asad Umar immediately table the Tenant (Amendment) Bill in the upper house for its passage.

‘Domestic violence bill to be passed soon’

They reminded that the Senate Standing Committee on Interior had approved a draft of the document some four months ago but it has yet to be taken up on the floor of the upper house due to unidentified reasons.

The officials said that they agreed with the amendment since Dr Awaan had taken all stakeholders into confidence before drafting it while serving as the federal law minister.

Baloch added that the enforcement of the bill will help reduce the problems faced by the traders as it will enable the referral of tenancy disputes to a committee before reaching the court.

Businesses have been ruined due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) and the subsequent lockdown, while tenancy disputes have escalated during this period, the officials added.

They said that it was time that the government provide relief to the business community of the federal capital.
