ECP seeks proposals from Punjab govt on local govt polls

Also issues directions for completion of initial work on delimitation of constituencies in Sindh

ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday sought recommendations from the Punjab local government secretary for holding election stepwise or on the same date.

The commission also issued directions for the completion of initial work on the delimitation of constituencies for local government election in Sindh.

The chief election commissioner (CEC) asked the concerned wings to complete their work on time regarding the election material and other election-related arrangements.

A meeting regarding the holding of local government election in Punjab was held under the chairmanship of CEC in which ECP members and Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat participated.

The ECP asked for suggestions from the Punjab local government secretary for holding election in different stages or on the same date, while the Punjab government sought time for the purpose.

The CEC noted that steps will be taken in collaboration with the Punjab government to hold election after receiving recommendations from them.

The participants of the meeting were also briefed on the organisation of local government polls in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The ECP directed its secretary to hold a meeting with the K-P local government secretary.

The commission also ordered the completion of initial work on the delimitation of constituencies for local government election in Sindh.

The local government institutions in Sindh will complete their tenure on August 30.
