A devastating explosion ripped through the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday, leaving thousands injured and dozens dead and missing. According to Al Jazeera, the cause wasn’t immediately clear, but officials have linked it to about 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been confiscated and stored at the port of Beirut for six years.

The explosion not only sent shockwaves across central Beirut, causing extensive damage but rang out across the world, with millions tweeting about it Tuesday evening, including many celebs.

Taking to Twitter to express his shock, actor and activist Hamza Ali Abbasi, wrote, “Ya Allah, have mercy. Prayers for Lebanon. Way too tragic and heartbreaking.”

He wasn’t the only one to address the explosion, as Bin Roye actor Armeena Khan tweeted about friends in Lebanon. “My friend sent me this photo from Beirut,” she wrote, attaching a picture of a damaged house. “His house is 15 km (and some more) away from the explosion. This is a lot of damage and actually highlights the magnitude of the explosion. I pray for the people of Beirut.”

Her co-star in the same film, Humayun Saeed also tweeted a picture of the blast site, writing, “Prayers for Beirut. May Allah protect us all.” The photograph showed the harrowing leveling of the surrounding buildings and the total devastation at the site.

Singer Hadiqa Kiani echoed similar sentiments after checking up on family and friends in the ill-fated city. “This is devastating. I just called every friend and family member I have in Beirut and each of them was directly impacted. Praying for Lebanon,’ she wrote.

Cheekh actor Saba Qamar also extended prayers for the impacted city. “My heart goes out to you Beirut! Heartiest prayers for all those who have been affected by this tragic blast,” she commented, adding, “Such a beautiful country going through the worst of times!”

Mehwish Hayat also chimed in, saying how the footage coming in from Beirut was horrifying. “My heart grieves for all the people suffering... Sending them lots of prayers and love,” she tweeted from her verified account.

TV host and actor Juggun Kazim also shared a video of the blast, writing, “The heartbreaking explosion in Beirut... it is just so tragic. Prayers for the people of Lebanon. Praying for all those who have lost loved ones and for all the people who are injured.”
