RAWALPINDI:

Price magistrates in Rawalpindi on Tuesday penalised at least 20 bread oven (tandoor) owners for selling flatbread at inflated rates.

The magistrates conducted raids in different areas of the city on directions of the Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anwarul Haq.

A collective fine of around Rs110,000 was imposed on tandoors in Adiala Road, Dhok Syedan, Chakri Road, and Gulzar-e-Quaid.

The All Pakistan Naanbai Association condemned the move by the district administration. The association’s president Shafique Qureshi said that they could not sell flatbread at official rates. If the government wants them to do so, it should bring down flour prices, he added. The official announced that they would not tolerate penalties and warned of staging protests and sit-ins against it.
