Tribute paid to police martyrs
Like other parts of Punjab, ‘National Police Martyrs’ Day’ (Yaum-e-Shuhada Police) was celebrated with zeal and zest in the provincial capital as well.
The National Police Martyrs Day was being celebrated after additional IG Safwat Ghayus was killed in a suicide blast in Peshawar on the same day, August 4, in 2010. He at that time was heading frontier constabulary.
Since that day, August 4 is celebrated as National Police Martyrs Day to pay homage to the police personnel that gave their lives in war against terrorism and fighting crime.
A large number of personnel including senior police officers of the rank of additional IG, DIG and SSP had lost lives. In Punjab only, over 1400 police personnel sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
In Lahore, the day was celebrated in various ways. Ceremonies and functions were held besides visiting graves and families of the martyred soldiers.
Lahore CCPO Zulfiqar Hameed saluted the commemorative plaque of martyrs at Police Lines, Qilla Gujjar Singh. On this occasion, the CCPO said that 315 officers of Lahore police were martyred for maintaining safety and security of citizens.
He added that Lahore police martyrs included 208 constables, 30 head constables, 28 ASIs, one traffic warden, 35 sub inspectors, six inspectors while martyrs police include four DSPs, one SP, one SSP and an officer of DIG rank are also involved.
