Court dismisses case against arrested tanker drivers

A local court dismissed on Thursday a case against 11 water tanker drivers, who had been arrested in Mochko for allegedly supplying contaminated water.

The police produced the arrested drivers before the West judicial magistrate.

The court asked the investigation officer (IO) whether the water samples from the seized tankers had been tested, to which the IO replied in the negative, adding that Karachi Water and Sewerage Board officials were not contacted for the tests either.

Expressing annoyance over this, the court dismissed the case, commenting that the prosecution and IO had failed to prove the allegations against the accused.

The Mochko police had impounded 11 water tankers and arrested their drivers for allegedly supplying contaminated water.

Liquor recovery case

Separately, the South judicial magistrate adjourned the hearing of a liquor recovery case against former provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon due to his absence.

The magistrate was hearing the case at the Karachi City Court, where Memon did not appear during the session. His counsel informed the court that Memon had contracted coronavirus and so could not appear in court.

The court adjourned the hearing till August 12.

Illegal remittance

Meanwhile, a local court handed over the accused in an illegal remittances case to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a four-day physical remand.

The accused was presented by FIA officials before the South judicial magistrate. The officials informed the court that the accused were involved in illegal money transfers through hawala and hundi, in the name of imports and exports.

The officials stated that the accused, Javed Ahmed, had to be interrogated about his accomplices and requested the court to grant his physical remand.

The court remanded Ahmed to the FIA's custody for four days.

Ahmed was arrested from his office at MA Jinnah Road, while Rs1.2 million in cash, mobile phones, cheque books, cash counting machines, laptops and other items were seized from his office.

Harassment

Moreover, the East judicial magistrate approved the bail of two men accused of harassing a female student, against a surety of Rs50,000 each.

According to police, the accused, Younis Buneri and Anwarzad alias Colonel, were accused of harassing a female matriculation student in Essa Nagri.

The police had registered a case against the duo after a video of the student went viral on social media.
