UAF deputes 25 interns to curb locusts

The entire country is under the threat of attacks if the desert locust is not eradicated says VC

FAISALABAD:

The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has dispatched a team of 25 trained interns to Cholistan and Thar to contribute in the elimination of locusts.
The interns have joined the National Disaster Management Authority and the Federal Plant Protection Department to work on locust control under their supervision. UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ashraf congratulated the Department of Entomology for training the interns.
“In the country, as many as 38% of the area is breeding ground for the desert locust, whereas the entire country is under the threat of attacks if the desert locust is not eradicated in the breeding regions,” said the VC.
He lauded the measurers of the government for establishing a National Locust Control Centre to combat the plague which has destroyed agriculture on a vast tract with severe attacks in 60 out of 135 districts. The VC said UAF had established a Locust Research and Development Cell to strengthen research, development and outreach activities, and coordinate with national and regional organisations.
