PESHAWAR:

A man was injured after he was struck by a shuttle of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the city's Chamkani area on Monday.

Buses are running in the dedicated corridor on a trial basis.

Witnesses said that the victim had managed to sneak through the fence, which has been put up to ensure that the tracks remain free of traffic. He jumped onto the tracks to cross over to the other side when he was hit by the bus.

Following the incident, authorities briefly suspended the trial operation of the bus service on the particular section of the track while a probe was launched into the accident.

The mass transit project initiated by the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has drawn strong criticism for costing billions more than the original estimations and missing its deadlines on multiple occasions. It has also added to public woes over what is claimed to be poor planning.

Residents of Peshawar have been suffering traffic chaos ever since swaths of the city roads were dug up for the project, whereas current monsoon rains caused the urban flood.
