ISLAMABAD:

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research on Thursday said there was no dearth of wheat in the country as abundant stocks of over 6.7 million tons were available to meet domestic requirements of the grain and flour. “The ministry has been bridging the gap between domestic supply and demand of wheat, besides ensuring food security and price stabilisation for the commodity,” it said in a statement. Besides ensuring a smooth supply of wheat and flour in local markets, wheat stocks were also available for keeping strategic reserves. During the current season, the public sector procured about 6.6 million tons of wheat, it said, adding that wheat stocks as on July 16 were calculated at 6.7 million tons against 7.7 million tons in the same period of last year. It said the ministry was also determined to take all appropriate measures to overcome any issues pertaining to wheat. In order to ensure a smooth wheat demand and supply situation, decisions had also been taken in a recent meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet. The ECC emphasised that the Sindh government should announce its wheat release policy without further delay.
