Heatstroke warning issued for Rawalpindi

People advised to stay indoors during day, consume lots of liquids

With mercury level expected to go above 45 degrees Celsius in coming days, the District Health Authority (DHA) has issued heatstroke advisory for people.

The advisory has been issued by the DHA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Sohail Ahmed Chaudhry and District Surveillance Coordinator Dr Muhammad Ali Mirza.

People have been warned that the temperature can rise to 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Therefore, they have been urged to implement all precautionary guidelines to remain safe from getting affected by the heatstroke.

The suggestions include consumption of water in ample quantities and avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm. Even if it is necessary to go out in the duration, a person should cover his head properly and rub the exposed body parts with a wet towel to keep body temperature cool and stable.

In case of getting affected by hot wind or extreme heat, the person should be immediately moved to a cool and safe place. The heatstroke victims head should be kept lifted above the trunk and wet cloth piece should be rubbed on the body.

The advisory said that people should also avoid getting tired when the sun is shining the brightest.

The DHA CEO advised the people to drink plenty of water and juices to wash out their upper respiratory system as rise in temperature results in various respiratory disorders including diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach ache and loose motions.

He urged upon the residents to rely more on eating fruits and vegetables instead of eating fried items like 'pakoras', 'samosas' and high-calorie foods.

Officials put heatstroke death toll at 1,213​​​​​​​

He said citizens should wear loose light-coloured clothing to reduce heat absorption and facilitate sweat evaporation and heat dissipation.

He said citizens shouldn’t engage in prolonged activities like hiking or trekking as heat, sweating and exhaustion place additional demands on one’s physique while they should choose to perform outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon.
