Murree may get parking plaza soon

Facility will have capacity for 4,000 vehicles

RAWALPINDI:

With the hill-station arguably the busiest tourist destination in the country, Murree is likely to get a solution for its chronic traffic congestion since the government plans to build a parking plaza there.

The construction of the plaza was decided during a meeting of the Murree Improvement Trust on Friday. Punjab Housing Minister Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed chaired the meeting, while it was participated by officers of the district administration and members of the trust.

The commercial plaza will be able to accommodate 4,000 vehicles, allowing for the smooth flow of traffic during the busy tourist months.

Parking plaza functional again; or so they claim

Rasheed said that the location for the parking plaza has been finalised. Once complete, the minister hoped that it will fulfil the parking needs of the hill station for the next 20 years.

He added that the large commercial parking plaza will be developed on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.

The district administration and even the defunct Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation had prepared summaries for a parking plaza in the tourist hotspot multiple times.
