KU makes plans for online examinations

Over 42,000 students from the varsity, affiliated institutions to take the exams

After much deliberation and delay, the University of Karachi (KU) has made plans for online examinations for over 42,000 students at the varsity and its affiliated institutions operating under a semester system.

A report pertaining to the exam policy has been handed over to the KU registrar by the Academic Council's committee formed in this regard. It will now be presented before the Deans' Committee, headed by KU vice chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi, for approval.

According to the report, assessment during the semester may include mid-term exams, case study projects, thematic essays, class presentations, tests, activities, quizzes, e-portfolios, open book assessments and verbal exams.

The annual exam will follow a similar pattern, with the schedule and grades to be determined by the relevant course in-charges.

For practical assessments, only the methodology section of lab work will be included in the exam and a video of the lab results will be shared with the students, according to the report, which adds that the assessment will be verbal.

The exams and thesis defense of MPhil and PhD candidates will be verbal as well.

Meanwhile, the results for affiliated institutions will be divided into two parts, where 40 per cent will be decided by the institutions themselves and 60 per cent through KU's final examination policy.

The report suggests that online exams can be taken through platforms such as Skype, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp video calls. It adds that those with concerns regarding internet connectivity and availability - or any other inconvenience - may submit applications to faculty members.
