Blackpink dethrones BTS with latest music video

The K-Pop girl group's ‘How You Like That’ snatched two YouTube records previously held by BTS

Blackpink’s latest release How You Like That has snatched the crown from BTS for the most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours.

The K-pop powerhouse group’s dynamic new single garnered 86.3 million views in the first 24 hours of release on YouTube, and was the most trending video on the platform, according to Variety. The view count conveniently topped the previous record-holders’ Boy With Luv featuring Halsey, which amassed 74.6 million views on the first day of its release in April 2019, per YouTube.

Not to mention, featuring Blackpink's Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa, the video also became the fastest in YouTube history to hit 100 million views, hitting 94 million in the first 30 hours according to Kworb. After premiering on June 26, it achieved the milestone in just 1.5 days, as opposed to the 1.6 days taken by BTS' Boy With Luv.

Not only did the group dethrone BTS, but Blackpink’s video also set a new record for the biggest-ever YouTube Premiere. With 1.66 million peak concurrent viewers, the video is reaching new heights said the video streaming platform.

Variety’s senior music editor Jem Aswad tagged How You Like That as one of the best singles of the week, praising it as “another summer burner.” The 3-minute track, crafted for the group’s global fanbase, combines lyrics in both Korean and English

“The latest from these K-pop titans is actually a sleight of hand,” Aswad wrote. “It starts off pop, but on the chorus, the beat changes up and suddenly it’s all swagger, with some hot rapping and a grinding beat — and a much more aggro attitude than we might have come to expect.”

Blackpink has reclaimed the 24-hour views title on YouTube from BTS after previously setting that high-water mark in April 2019 with Kill This Love (56.7 million views in its first 24 hours) after topping Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next.

As a measure of overnight popularity, the number of YouTube views in the first 24 hours of release has become a key data point for bragging rights and promotion. Last September, YouTube changed its methodology for YouTube Music Charts to no longer count paid advertising views in 24-hour tallies — as an effort to best reflect authentic fan engagement. Since earlier reports claimed that Blackpink’s Kill This Love had been promoted via YouTube ads.

Nevertheless, the band is managed by South Korea’s YG Entertainment, which is also the entertainment company behind K-pop boy band Big Bang and other artists. Among other appearances, the massively popular South Korean girl group featured at the 2019 Coachella music fest.
