As part of its reforms programme, the Punjab police has decided to upgrade as many as 25 police check posts in Rawalpindi district to the status of mini-police stations. The move is part of a wider programme to be undertaken across the province.
While inaugurating the project, Punjab Inspector General (IG) of Police Shoaib Dastagir said that the front desks at these check posts will help resolve public complaints along with improving policing in the province.
He added that closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at these check posts which are expected to help end public complaints about illegal detentions and poor treatment of people in lockups.
In the first phase, he said that the front desks have been set up at pickets in Hameeda, Shah Faisal, Kuchery, Daultana and Industry areas of the city.
Moreover, under the new system, once a complaint is lodged by a citizen, the police will issue them a unique case number. This number will help citizens track and monitor the progress made in their complaints by the police without having to visit the police system again and again.
The new system will help in addressing public grievances about delays in taking action, IGP Dastagir said.
Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Ahsan Younus said that the system is being put in place to reform the police station culture. He said that pickets part of the programme have been provided with equipment such as printers, scanners, uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems, and CCTV cameras.
