Father’s Day, all but forgotten

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan celebrates Father’s Day on the third Sunday of every June, along with 58 other countries.

The day, meant to honour fathers and celebrate their fatherhood, falls on June 20 this year. However a survey conducted by The Express Tribune revealed that most of the people contacted were not aware of the day.

Pasha Zeerak, who works at Illusion, a popular gift shop in Jinnah Super Market, said that very few people had come to their shop to buy something for Father’s Day. “But people came in much larger numbers on Mother’s Day to buy gifts,” he said.

Morever, there is no event planned for the day. This is in stark contrast to Mother’s Day, which was celebrated on May 9 with great enthusiasm throughout the country. Ramzan Sajid, CDA’s spokesperson, said that authority was not responsible for organising such events. “We only help others organise events,” he said.

However, those who have lost their fathers are particularly cognizant of the day. Fazan Asif, a resident of Islamabad, said, “I never celebrated the day when my father was alive but this year I plan to celebrate it by visiting my father’s grave early in the morning to express my love and gratitude to him.”

Dr Naheeda Mehak, another local, said she celebrates the day by asking people around her to respect and love their fathers and try and spend as much time with them as possible. She lost her father when she was nine.
