Gang of women thieves busted

A group of women in Islamabad, who went around stealing iron fences and construction material, was arrested by police.

ISLAMABAD:
A group of women who brazenly went around stealing iron fences and construction material from different sectors of Islamabad on a public transport vehicle was arrested by Margalla Police.

Early Saturday morning, guards of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) called 15 Police to inform them about the presence of some women busy in uprooting the iron fence at a park in Sector I-8/1.

When a nearby police patrol arrived, the women were caught red-handed trying to steal 400 meters long optic fibre cable from outside a warehouse in Sector I-8/2.

Also arrested was a driver of the vehicle who was allegedly involved in providing ‘pick and drop’ services to this gang.

“It was their fourth such activity at this park,” said Muhammad Ramzan, one of the five guards deputed at the park by the CDA. “We could not stop them because we didn’t have weapons on us.”

Two days ago, they had stolen construction material from the site of an Imam Bargah near the park, he added.

Hameedan Bibi, Inayat Bibi and Bashiran Bibi, all resident of slums near Pirwadhai Mor in Rawalpindi, were later shifted to the women police station for further investigations. However, their fourth male accomplice Muhammad Ajmal, a resident of Abbottabad, was sent to lock-up in Margalla Police Station on a four-day physical remand. Police also impounded the Toyota Hiace they had used for their criminal activity.

Having observed the women’s activities for over a period of days, Ramzan said, “First they carry out reconnaissance of the area they target. They made three trips to this area within five minutes to ensure no police was around.”

He said some of them came to the park while others went across the road to another sector to target a warehouse of cables. Although an armed security guard was stationed at the warehouse, he was asleep. “One of the women even dared to go into the guard’s cabin and put out the lights,” another CDA guard Raja Bashir said.

“Then with the help of another accomplice, the woman moved a bundle of 400m long cable lying outside.”

Investigation officer Muhammad Imran said the police were after this gang of women thieves for days after complaints by CDA officials.

Later, all four suspects were produced before court and sent on a four-day physical remand.
