RAWALPINDI:
To counter the arbitrary price hike, the Rawalpindi district administration has decided to set up a Kisan (farmer) market on Murree Road where the people can buy fresh fruits and vegetables at cheaper rates directly from farmers.

Initially, on the directions of the Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Captain (retired) Anwarul Haq, the market was set up near Shamsabad on Murree Road. Farmers have been allowed to bring fresh vegetables and fruits directly from their fields to the market so that the middleman, wholesalers and others who may hoard and artificially drive up prices may be cut out.

Separately, the administration has reserved space for growers in different Sunday bazaars in the city including those set up at Committee Chowk, Chohar Chowk, Morgah, and Chungi 22.

For the convenience of farmers and to maintain cheaper rates, the administration has decided to waive all kinds of taxes and fees which are usually required to be paid for occupying space in markets operated by the government.

Further, the administration has also established model bazaars in multiple areas of the city where special vegetable and fruit counters have been set up.

The district officials said that the experiment of the Kisan market had been successful during Ramazan and hence, the government has decided to continue it.
