HYDERABAD:
For a clash between the police and residents of a village in Jamshoro district, which left dozens including policemen injured, 130 villagers have been booked while 43 have been arrested. Jamshoro Police declared on Saturday the arrest of 25 women and 18 men, who have been charged with assaulting the police.
However, the incident has drawn ire of opposition parties who blamed the police for acting like a colonial power by demolishing houses and assaulting men and women indiscriminately. The Singharo Khoso village, located along the Indus highway, remains surrounded by police.
The clash occurred on June 12. The police claimed that the Indus Coal Mines Police was attacked by villagers with stones and wooden sticks when the cops were returning to the police station after arresting four suspects who belonged to that the village.
SHO Ayub Odho claimed that six policemen were injured in the attack by the villagers who staged a protest sit-in on the Indus highway to block the police mobile. The villagers allegedly helped the arrested suspects escape. Jamshoro SSP Amjad Shaikh later sent reinforcement headed by ASP Aleena Rajpar on the same day to arrest the people who allegedly attacked the police and helped the suspects escape.
The team arrested 10 people from the village and took them to the police station. In reaction, the residents, including women and children, staged a protest sit-in on the Indus highway and pelted stones on five police mobiles and beat the cops as well.
The police claimed 20 cops were injured in the two attacks. The villagers, on their part, blamed the police for injuring dozens of village residents, including two young boys with gunshots.
"The attackers have taken law in their hands by attacking and injuring policemen," said the SSP while talking to the media.
In reaction, the people of the Khoso community held protests in several districts demanding the release of the detained women and children. They called for the arrest of cops involved in the raid on the village.
Leaders of nationalist parties and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) as well as civil society activists condemned the police raid and the arrest of women. Advocate Sajjad Chandio of the Awami Tehreek visited the village on Sunday to take account of the incident.
