PESHAWAR:
As the province promotes students into the next grades based on past results, it may allow even those students to be promoted who may have previously failed in a couple of subjects, provided they sit a special exam next month

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Boards Chairpersons Committee met under its Chairperson Sharif Gul on Monday. It was attended by the chairpersons of different educational boards from across the province.

Board chairpersons provided a set of recommendations on what course can be adopted after matriculation and intermediate examinations were suspended due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Just over half of students pass 9th grade

For promotion to the next grade, students of ninth grade and the first year will be awarded marks in accordance with their previous results with three per cent additional grace marks.

Officials suggested that students who had previously failed one or two exams and who are willing to improve their results can attempt a special exam that will be organised after approval from the provincial government.

They further said that the special exam will be conducted across the province from July 15.

Later, the committee, in a joint statement, said that they have suggested to K-P Chief Minister Mahmood Khan to give 33 per cent grace marks to students who have failed in either one or two papers.

However, students availing such a facility will not be granted the three per cent additional grace marks.

The set of recommendations has been sent to the provincial government through the K-P Elementary and Secondary Education (K-PESE) secretary for approval.

Before it is presented in the provincial cabinet, the K-P education minister and secretaries of primary and secondary as well as higher education will meet with the chairperson of educational boards and devise a final set of recommendations. These suggestions will then be presented before the cabinet for approval.
