K-P begins work on clean energy project

ADB will provide Rs4.4b for solar energy scheme

The provincial government has begun work on its ‘Access to clean Energy Programme’ for solarization of schools, mosques and basic health units in the province.

Under the project, solarisation of 8,000 schools, 40,00 mosques and 187 basic health units (BHUs) would be carried out. The projects after completion would be proved as effective control over current energy crisis.

Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (PEDO) Chief Executive Officer Naeem Khan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Power Secretary Zubair Khan on Wednesday witnessed the contract signing in this regard.

The solarisation of 8,000 Schools and 187 BHUs project director Pir Aimal and solarisation of 4000 mosques project director Khurram Durrani have signed the agreements with selected contractors.


With the financial assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB) of Rs4.4 billion, a total of 8,000 schools and 187 BHUs will be converted to solar energy system and about Rs2.4 billion of Annual Development Program (ADP) will be utilised for the solarization of 4,000 mosques in the province. The projects will be completed within two years.

The provincial government has also planned construction of mini and micro hydropower project on major canals, rivers and tributaries, and solarisation of schools and basic health units in the province.

At least 160 hydropower sites on major canals in all districts of the province have been identified and consultants have been hired for its execution.
