Punjab police investigation reports go digital
Experts to train cops on use a specialised software
RAWALPINDI:
In an effort to shift from paper to electronic records, Punjab police have directed to formulate records of all investigations under certain sections digitally.
Handwritten reports in fashion since ages will be phased out after June 20, officials said.
In the initial phase, the entry of investigation record of cases under 44 various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and special laws including those related to the suicide attempt, illegal arms and gambling and such would be maintained on computers.
The Investigation Officers (IOs) will make the investigations part of the record through a specialised software instead of writing it down. The officials said that the hand-written copies of it will hold no value after June 20. The record of First Information Reports (FIRs) has already been computerised in the province.
For this purpose, the Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Ahsan Younus has sent a letter to the Investigation SSP, Divisional SPs, SDPOs, and SHOs.
The letter read that the IOs should be informed that the handwritten report would not be acceptable after June 20. It added that the investigators must be obliged to maintain all records digitally after the given deadline.
The IOs can take the assistance of technicians and front desk staff of their related police stations, it added. The Express Tribune learnt that the CPO had also called a special team from Lahore to train the IOs at the police stations’ level.
The police chief said that the use of technology would help save valuable time of the investigators while it would also help in maintaining the record in an organised and transparent manner.
