Shaheed quota : Slain top jailor’s son fights to keep govt house
Amanullah Khan Niazi’s family was served notice by Central Prison Karachi to vacate the bungalow in a week.
KARACHI:
The family of a slain top jail official Amanullah Khan Niazi has gone to court against being kicked out of the government accommodation.
Niazi, who was the Assistant Superintendent of Central Prison Karachi, was targeted in June 2006 along with four other men.
Assailants ambushed their vehicle in Saddar, near Electronics market, as they were returning to the prison after attending a meeting.
The brazen attempt by men on motorcycles, who sprayed the vehicle with bullets, shocked the top brass.
Now, Niazi’s son Abdul Rauf has filed a petition, saying that on June 22, the superintendent of the Central Prison Karachi issued them a notice, asking them to vacate the official bungalow in seven days.
Rauf submitted that it was government policy to continue paying the salary, allowances and benefits for officers until their age of retirement. It also gives a job to one member of the family and they are allowed to retain accommodation provided by the government.
The petitioner said that their family had no other place to go and under the circumstances should be allowed to continue living in the government accommodation till Niazi would have reached the age of superannuation or retirement.
Rauf also said that he had applied for a job as an Assistant Superintendent under the “Shaheed Quota”, which is given to the children of policemen who have died in the line of duty. But this application has yet to be decided along with their compensation.
Niazi’s son submitted that he had sat the final examination for a BBA degree and was waiting for his results.
The bench heard the initial arguments by Rauf’s lawyer Gohar Iqbal and ordered for notices to be issued to the Advocate General of Sindh for August 22. It also ordered the status quo to be upheld in the petition.
