RAWALPINDI: Despite the ease in the lockdown - imposed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) - and reopening of lower courts across the province, under trial prisoners have not been allowed to appear before the courts. As a result, several cases of terrorism, narcotics, customs, corruption etc could not proceed. Court officials said that the presence of suspects in their respective cases was mandatory. Meanwhile, the authorities have failed to introduce an online system as an alternative.

Jail officials told The Express Tribune they have received no such orders from the authorities. They added that around 90 suspects are brought in police vans daily which can transmit Covid-19. Sources said consultations with all stakeholders is underway.
