KARACHI: Following an inquiry, 24 employees from the Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) were suspended by Karachi mayor Wasim Akhtar on Tuesday.

Akhtar had earlier formed a three-member committee after KMDC principal Dr Syed Mahmood Haider sent him a report regarding the misappropriation of salary.

The committee found the 24 employees involved in the matter and on the basis of its report, they were suspended by the mayor, while further investigation is being carried out. The salaries, pensions and provident funds of the employees will be revoked if they are found responsible for the misappropriation after the final investigation.

A Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) spokesperson stated that KMDC was an independent institution with a governing body which was fully empowered to take such decisions. He added that the committee was headed by the city mayor. Claiming that the KMC was taking diligent steps to eradicate corruption, the spokesperson revealed that Akhtar had ordered a third-party audit of KMDC's income and expenditures in the last 10 years.
