Poliovirus detected in Multan sewage
DC urges Health Department to launch emergency programme against the virus
MULTAN:
The district administration has issued an alert after poliovirus was detected in sewage in the Ali Town area.
Multan Deputy Commissioner Aamer Khattak on Wednesday issued directives to the Health Department to launch an emergency programme against poliovirus.
While presiding over a meeting of health officials at the Circuit House, he ordered the authorities concerned to launch an anti-polio campaign in all union councils linked with the Ali Town sewage disposal.
He said that the discovery of poliovirus was surprising as there was little movement of people and transportation from other provinces due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
He ordered launch of a study to ascertain from where the virus had come to the area.
He maintained that there was a need to stay alert after polio cases were reported in surrounding districts.
He ordered the officials to focus on gypsy children during the polio vaccination drive and ensure training of new vaccinators. He also said that the threat of dengue had increased after recent rains and the departments concerned should submit comprehensive plans to the DC office about their steps in this regard.
He ordered lodging of cases against the open scrapyard owners who do not take preventive steps against dengue.
