Six children killed as madrassa roof collapses

As many as 13 other children sustained serious injuries

MIRANSHAH: At least six children were killed and 13 others sustained serious injuries when the roof of a madrassa collapsed in North Waziristan district. Heavy rains have lashed several districts of the province over the past 24 hours causing damages to mud houses and structures built with substandard construction material.

Locals told The Express Tribune that Abdullah Jan, a resident of Zabar Jan Kota area of Shiwa tehsil, had constructed two rooms for a madrassa inside his house. The roof of the madrassa collapsed due to heavy rain, killing at least six children on the spot.

As many as 13 other children sustained serious injuries.

Villagers said that students were studying in the seminary when its roof collapsed and that they had to pull the dead and injured from the debris.

They were immediately rushed to a hospital in Thal area of Kurram district. Doctors said that most of the injured children brought to the hospital were in critical conditions.

Local authorities also confirmed the incident and said five children were killed on the spot while one succumbed to his injuries while on the way to the hospital.
