Celebrities come out in protest for #BlackLivesMatter movement
Many known faces, including Halsey and Ariana Grande, were spotted at the protests that are ravaging USA
America is literally under fire, as protests against the killing of an African-American man from Minneapolis, George Floyd, erupt across the country. The video of the incident has sparked rekindled the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, which works against violence and systemic racism against the community.
While the protests turned violent in major states, many celebs have also taken to social media to pledge their support. However, not all of them have played it safe: some even showed up on the streets to take an active part. Here are some of the famous faces who have been marching alongside the public in honour of Floyd.
Halsey
Pop-star Halsey came out on the streets on Saturday, 30 May, in Los Angeles, where she was caught in a violent protest. She even live-streamed her experienced on her Instagram account, lending more traction to the movement and informing more people of the events.
“Most of us were simply begging them to have empathy, to reconsider, to consider humanity and our nation’s history and future. They opened fire multiple times. I was hit twice. Once by pellets and once by shrapnel,” she shared on Twitter.
Ariana Grande
Pop diva Ariana Grande also marched in Los Angeles on 30 May, albeit in a different location that remained peaceful. She documented her participation on her Instagram stories, in which she was seen donning a mask that covered her face, and carrying a sign that read ‘Black Lives Matter.’
Emily Ratajkowski
Popular model who is also a former Victoria’s Secret angel, also made her way to one the marches elsewhere in Los Angeles. She stated that the “police were militarised and civilians had no weapons.”
“These are not violent protests but they become violent when an actual Army is deployed,” she added. She took to Twitter to share a video from the protest that showed a huge plume of black smoke rising in the distance with marchers in the foreground carrying signs, one of which said, ‘For George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery.’
J. Cole
Rapper J. Cole was spotted marching in his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Cole maintained a low profile marching alongside the protesters until he was noticed by some who then clicked pictures with him. The rapper is known to incorporate his activism in his lyrics.
Machine Gun Kelly
Rapper Machine Gun Kelly was also spotted at a march in Beverly Hills, with a sign that read, ‘Silence is Betrayal’. MGK was lauded as a strong ally on Twitter for actually coming out and marching for the movement instead of just tweeting about it.
Nick Cannon
Nick Cannon also took to the streets, posting a picture of himself in the crowd where he’s seen in a black hoodie with Floyd’s apparent last words on it saying, “Please, I can’t breathe.” He then took to Instagram to share a long message addressing the protests, slavery and the pandemic. “They gon’ hear us loud and clear!’ he wrote.
