Educationist Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai passes away

He died at the age of 76, after a brief illness

KARACHI: Renowned educationist, scholar, author and Ziauddin University Examination Board executive director Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai passed away on Sunday, at the age of 76, after a brief illness.

His funeral prayers were offered in Hassan Bin Sabit mosque on University Road on Sunday evening. The funeral was attended by Hyderabad Educational Board chairperson Dr Muhammad Memon, Sindh Private Institutions director Dr Mansoob Siddiqi, Sindh Higher Education Commission secretary Moin Siddiqi and others.

Zai was born in Jaipur, India, on September 18, 1944 but acquired his early education in Hyderabad. He held a Masters degree in English, Urdu and Sociology, besides being awarded Bachelors degrees in education as well as in law.

He started his career as an English literature lecturer at a private school and later joined Radio Pakistan as an assistant director.

He was appointed as the district education officer (DEO) in Tharparkar in the early 80s, after which he was transferred to Karachi in 1984, being appointed as the West and Central DEO.

In the late 90s, Zai was posted as the additional planning and coordination secretary in the education department, and later, as Karachi DEO after the establishment of the local government in 2000.

He also served as the additional academic secretary and Sindh Textbook Board chairperson in 2003, at the time of his retirement. Besides, he was the first chairperson of the Mirpurkhas Educational Board and served as the chairperson of Karachi Intermediate Board from 2007 to 2015.

Zai had been serving as Ziauddin Educational Board executive director for the past two and a half years, after stepping down from his position at the Board of Secondary Education, Karachi.

Some of his popular pieces of writings include Des Pardes, Ankh Samander and Din Dareechay.
