France reports 83 new deaths from coronavirus

Death toll in country rises to 28,215, health ministry says

France on Thursday confirmed 83 new deaths over the past 24 hours, the country’s Health Ministry announced on Thursday.

According to the ministry, deaths in hospital stand at 58, with only 25 persons reported to have succumbed to the disease in nursing homes. The total number of fatalities in the hospital is 17,870 and the total in nursing homes is 10,345.

Since the start of the outbreak, the death toll in France stands at 28,215, with cases of infection rising to some degree, to 144,163, an increase of 318 cases over the previous day.


The number of hospitalizations dropped again on Thursday with cases standing now at 17,583, another sizable drop of 299 patients. The number of those in intensive care reached 1,745, down by 49 patients over Wednesday.

Despite the severity of the virus, most people experience mild symptoms and recover. Since the beginning of record-keeping for the disease, 63,858 people have recovered in France from the epidemic and have returned home.

After originating in China last December, Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has spread to 188 countries and regions across the world. Europe and the US are currently the worst-hit regions.

The pandemic has killed over 329,800 people, with more than 5.04 million cases and 1.92 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by the US-based Johns Hopkins University.
