Missing doctors: Doctors go on a two-hour token strike
Protesters took to the street after Dr Wasdev went missing.
KARACHI:
With reports of doctors going missing in rural Sindh, the abduction of Dr Wasdev in Thatta was the final straw for the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA). They took to the streets in a two-hour strike in Thatta.
“The situation is getting out of control. Doctors no longer feel safe,” said PMA president for Sindh Dr Samrina Hashmi. “If this continues, it will affect patient care adversely.”
Dr Wasdev, the latest missing doctor, was returning home to Karachi after duty in Thatta. The PMA says that no demands have been made yet.
On Monday, out-patient departments were closed from 8 am to 10 am and the PMA rally travelled from Civil Hospital, Thatta, to the National Highway where they protested for about 30 minutes. PMA general secretary for Thatta Ghulam Nabi says if the government does not take action to protect doctors then they will schedule a district-wide strike on August 3.
