JPMC begins plasma therapy for Covid-19
A memorandum of understanding was signed between JPMC and the NIBD in this regard on Tuesday
KARACHI:
Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has collaborated with the National Institute of Blood Diseases (NIBD) to treat Covid-19 patients through plasma immunisation therapy.
The therapy involves infusing blood plasma to coronavirus patients to help their immune system to fight off the highly-contagious disease. Convalescent plasma taken from a recovered patient is believed to be rich in the antibodies needed to cure the deadly infection.
Therapy sessions are to start from today (Wednesday), according to, JPMC executive director Dr Seemin Jamali.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between JPMC and the NIBD in this regard on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jamali said, “It is great that the NIBD has been selected by the Sindh government, after consultation with health experts, to assist in treating coronavirus patients through plasma immunisation therapy.”
Professor Tahir Shamsi, NIBD head, who also addressed the signing ceremony, said that patients would start getting better in two to four days after the initiation of therapy sessions.
Dr Jamali will supervise the therapy process at JPMC.
