Fighting corruption: Project director arrested for embezzlement

Rasheed Ahmed is suspected to have misappropriated millions of rupees by misreporting number of motorcycle parts.

The Punjab chapter of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested a project director of the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) on charges of corruption.


Rasheed Ahmed, the Public Sector Development Programme Upgrade and Modernisation of Workshop project director, is suspected to have misappropriated millions of rupees by misreporting the number of motorcycle parts PCSIR had supplied to Honda. In a raid on Friday, the FIA team led by assistant director Khawaja Hammadur Rehman recovered consignment documents showing that Ahmed had issued delivery receipts for 3,900 items. Only 2,000 were delivered to the recipient.

The PCSIR has also initiated a departmental inquiry against the officer. A project director in BS-19. Ahmed’s driver is also in FIA custody for interrogation. A case has been registered against him at FIA’s Anti-Corruption circle. FIA officials said further investigation was underway to determine if the vendors were colluding with the accused.
