Three arrested for using ambulance in smuggling bid

Two of the suspects pretended to have Covid-19, while one drove the rescue vehicle

KARACHI: Three men were arrested by the Napier police for allegedly attempting to smuggle large amounts of gutka in an ambulance near Kashti Chowk in Karachi on Monday.

According to SHO Jamal Laghari, the police stopped two men, with one impersonating a coronavirus patient and one pretending to be his attendant, on the basis of suspicion and found four gunny-bags containing gutka and cash under the stretchers in the ambulance.

"The bags contained 200 packets of Indian gutka and Rs345,000 in cash," said Laghari.

He stated that the contraband and cash were confiscated, while suspects Talha, Muhammad Hanif and ambulance driver Usman Ghani were arrested.

According to the statements of the suspects, they had been using the ambulance to supply gutka to different parts of the city from Hub Chowk in Balochistan.

Laghari further revealed that during their initial interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had each been paid Rs3,000 for carrying out their operation.

The suspects also disclosed that the ambulance owner, Amin, who hails from Afghanistan, uses two more ambulances for the same purpose.

The police have registered a case against the suspects and forwarded it to the investigation police.
