WAPDA retain national volleyball crown

Defending champions beat HEC in straight sets.

Defending champions Wapda stamped their authority on the national level by comprehensively defeating Higher Education Commission (HEC) 25-20, 25-21 and 25-12 in the final of the 10th National Women’s Volleyball Championship yesterday.


Wapda, right from the start, kept in control of proceedings, not allowing HEC to take the lead and won the close first set 25-20 only to double the lead by winning the second 25-21 and inching closer to retaining their crown.

Being 2-0 down, HEC lost all hopes of a comeback as Wapda came out comprehensive winners by sealing the third set 25-12 and once again proving to the be the best team in the country through effective blocking and counter-attacking.


Six teams participated in the four-day tournament with Punjab, FATA, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan being the other teams.

Islamabad beat Punjab in straight sets in the third-place playoff and managed to break a ten-year jinx where they never managed to stand on the podium.

Chaudhry Aslam Jameel, chief patron Islamabad Volleyball Association, was the chief guest of the concluding ceremony on the final day while Major (R ) Muhammad Afzal , Pakistan Volleyball Federation Secretary, Najma Anwar, tournament organising secretary and vice-president women’s wing were also present on the occasion.

“It is definitely encouraging to see women take on the field despite various challenges and hurdles,” Anwar told The Express Tribune. “Enthusiasm has been the key to the success of this tournament.”
