Dr Nafeesa Shah elected to Commonwealth body

Dr Shah is also chairperson of NCHD.

MNA from Sindh, Dr Nafeesa Shah has been elected unanimously vice chairperson of the executive committee of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association at the 57th Annual Conference of the Association , which concluded here, on Wednesday.


Dr Shah is elected to this position for a term of three years by the 40-member executive committee.


A former assistant editor of the newsmonthly The Herald, journalist-turned-educationist, and human rights activist Dr Shah is also chairperson of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) and member of PPP Finance Committee. Dr Shah has done doctorate in Social Anthropology from prestigious Oxford University and has been actively engaged in the education sector and women development. She is also president of Pakistan Girls Guide Association.

Meanwhile, Rana Mohammad Farooq , Speaker Punjab Assembly has been nominated to represent Pakistan in the Asia Group of CPA.

MNA from Punjab, Kashmala Tariq who contested for the post of Chairperson of the CPA lost the election in a three cornered fight with British parliamentarian Allen Haslehurst winning against a female parliamentarian from Samoa in the second round.

Sources said, Kashmala lost because the Indian vote went to the Samoa candidate and in the final round the contest was said to be very close.
