ISLAMABAD:
Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood has said that the government will welcome the academic support being extended by the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in launching a TeleSchool channel after the government closed on-campus classes in the wake of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
The AIOU will help build a knowledge-based platform providing education to students, who are currently stuck at their homes, Shafqat said during a meeting that was attended by the AIOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Ziaul Qayyum and other officials.
The ‘TeleSchool’ television channel will work as an alternative to the educational content delivery mechanism during the closure of educational institutions during the epidemic.
Mahmood said that since AIOU has the academic, technical and professional expertise, it can be a useful partner in this programme. He hoped that AIOU’s contribution to content delivery will be useful in managing the channel.
PTV will provide eight-hours of airtime to promote education through the channel. The dedicated channel will work for the promotion of education for the next three months. During the morning session, juniors will be given classes followed by seniors. The channel will likely start telecasting content within the next few days.
The vice-chancellor, while assuring his support in making the programme, successfully expressed his confidence that it will meet the students’ requirements during the lock-down period.
He assured that the university’s resources including its TV studios and academic contents will be available to present the programme.
Meanwhile, Mehmood further asked AIOU to develop content for the Accelerated Learning Programme– for students in grade I through eight. The quality contents could be delivered with the support of NCHD or such other organizations.
He added that they are planning to establish a Distance Learning Wing in the education ministry, especially for online learning and in this connection AIOU can be a supporting partner.
