In Sindh, jails fumigated amid virus worry

Prisoners have been instructed to take care of hygiene and sanitation and wash their hands frequently

Disinfectant was sprayed in four jails in Karachi on Thursday, as a preventive measure against the rapidly spreading coronavirus.

The fumigation was carried out at Central Jail, the juvenile jail, the women’s jail and Malir Jail.

“The aim of the exercise is to protect the prisoners against the pandemic,” Central Jail senior superintendent Mohammad Hassan Sahito told The Express Tribune.


Sahito said that the prisoners were being screened for the virus, their medical history was being checked and medical examinations were also being conducted. Besides, the prisoners, as well as officers and other staff at the jail, have been provided face masks and wash basins and hand sanitiser dispensers have been installed at multiple points in the jail, he added.

Moreover, the prisoners have been instructed to take care of hygiene and sanitation and wash their hands frequently.
