Nawaz says govt on warpath with judiciary

Says clipping SC’s powers will amount to attack on democracy.

ISLAMABAD:

PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has strongly criticised the government for ‘mocking’ the Supreme Court rulings, saying that the government was on a ‘confrontation course with the judiciary’.

Speaking in Express News programme, ‘Kal Tak’, Sharif said that the Supreme Court was playing its role as laid down in the constitution. “The apex court is administering justice and you cannot call it confrontation,” he said.

“But the government is reluctant to implement the apex court orders. It has been using delaying tactics in all matters,” Sharif said. “Anybody who wants rule of law in the country must help the judiciary.”

The PML-N chief said that his party would make efforts in and outside parliament to ensure the supremacy of the judiciary. He called upon all democratic institutions of the country to come forward and help his party in this cause.

Sharif hoped the government would not try to clip the powers of the Supreme Court because “this will be tantamount to attacking democracy in the country”.

He said that no Pakistani citizen would allow the government to attack democracy. “Dictator Pervez Musharraf had made an attempt. But the lawyers, civil society, media and political workers thwarted his attempt,” he added.

In a veiled threat, the PML-N chief said that his party would also play its role if President Asif Ali Zardari tried to do what Musharraf had done during his tenure.
