KRL extend unbeaten run in football league
Defeat KESC 1-0, WAPDA stunned by PIA.
KARACHI:
KRL continued their winning run in the Pakistan Premier Football League after a 1-0 win over KESC while PIA thrashed defending champions Wapda 4-1 yesterday.
KRL’s Mohammad Qasim scored the lone goal in the 57th minute as both teams struggled to find a way past the goal-keepers.
With the win, KRL extended their lead at the top of the championship table and now have 25 points from nine matches in the tournament.
“There is a sense of achievement in seeing the team do well,” said KRL coach Tariq Lutfi. “I’ve been criticised on my stint with the national team but KRL’s performance silences those who doubt my ability.”
Meanwhile, Lutfi’s former club PIA outplayed four-time PPFL champions Wapda despite conceding an early goal. Zeeshan Javed scored in the 10th minute but Saddam Hussain equalised in the 17th minute before Nasrullah’s goal in the 24th minute put PIA in the driving seat at half-time.
Hussain scored his second goal in the second half while Zeeshan Ali added more insult to injury with PIA’s fourth goal as Wapda were outclassed and now sit seventh with 11 points from nine games while PIA are placed third with 15 from seven matches.
In the third match of the day, Afghan FC defeated Pakistan Army 2-1 in Quetta. Afghan FC’s Abdul Nasir scored the opening goal of the match in the 15th minute, which was soon equalised with a cracking goal by Akhtar Khan in the 35th minute. However, Afghan FC’s Himat Khan scored the final and the match-winner in the 50th minute.
